Leila Motaei teaches piano performance, improvisation and composition to children and adults of all ages in a variety of styles from classical to pop to blues. She concentrates on creating a repertoire with her students that's reflective of their personal taste, as well as different approaches to studying technique and theory that are fitted to each individual's learning style.

Fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and newly relocated to Oakland near Lake Merritt, you may come directly to her lovely home studio for lessons, where she has a charming 100-year-old baby grand piano ready for her students. She also teaches select days in San Francisco at The Atelier; a beautiful boutique studio which crafts fine art pianos. It is conveniently located downtown, a 5-minute walk from the Powell Street BART Station. If you are not local, she teaches via Zoom, as well.

Leila holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Theory/Composition with an emphasis in Piano Performance from the University of California Davis. She has studied with John McCarthy & Dr. Victoria Neve. She has been teaching, writing, recording and performing professionally for more than 15 years.

She is a current member of the Music Teacher's Association of California, was a teacher at the Blue Bear School of Music in San Francisco for several years, in addition to having a full private studio. Her students have gone on to study at SOTA and The San Francisco Conservatory of Music as well as participate in composition master classes. She has also completed her Orff Schulwerk Pedagogy Certification.

Miss Leila is the absolute best piano teacher!! I’ve had her for over six years, and she’s been incredibly helpful from day one. Not only that, but she’s an absolute sweetheart. I was hesitant to try lessons when I was younger, but I’m so glad  I did, and Miss Leila played a major part in why. My family and I love her!

I see the excitement before and after class in my daughter, and it’s been consistent. Miss Leila's approach makes it so easy to learn the most difficult things. That too in a virtual class! The happiness and excitement stays before and after the class on my kid and as parents we can’t ask for more.

Leila has changed our 3 daughters perception of what piano lessons can be. Her enthusiasm and love for music is infectious and our kids have really improved since starting with her. I attribute that to her approach, patience and ability to keep them interested. Thanks, Leila!!

Ms. Leila is a talented, diplomatic, incredible teacher who I love taking piano lessons from!!! She takes a compassionate, devoted, and patient approach when it comes to her teaching, and is able to create new strategies and tools to cater to each student's personal needs.  She also creates a safe and warm learning environment. I always have a smile on my face after a lesson!

Leila has been teaching my children for the last 10 years. She is such a lovely, positive presence in their lives that they always look forward to their lessons. It’s a joy to hear her laughter ring through the house when she’s with them. She loves to teach and she’s very thoughtful in her approach to each child. She seems to know how to get them to stick with it when they’re struggling and how to challenge them when they’re ready for more. My younger child likes blues and jazz and even composing her own songs. And my older child is now playing complicated classical pieces.

Miss Leila’s piano lessons are always the highlight of my daughters week. The love and appreciation she has for piano shines through in her joyful classes.

Leila is a superb piano teacher, incredibly knowledgeable (music theory AND history of music), driven and talented. She is also very fun and witty, I always look forward to my weekly remote session. I know I must stretch her patience (a 60-years old guy with zero sense of rhythm trying to learn an instrument for the first time in his life!), but she always manages it with a smile and, oh gosh, I am actually making progress, this is amazing! One of the best things which happened to me during the pandemic!
